Chairman of the District signs off in style

Last year’s Chairman of the District of the Derbyshire Dales has signed off in style with a £5,700 presentation to the local Army regiment.

Councillor Tony Millward, whose civic year ended at the district council’s annual meeting last month, raised the cash for the benevolent fund for wounded soldiers and their families of the local 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters).

Special guest at a presentation at Matlock Town Hall yesterday (Tuesday) was the regimental ram mascot Lance Corporal Derby, attended by handlers Corporal Andy Skinner and Private Josh Roberts.

Cllr Millward represented the Derbyshire Dales at around 200 functions last year and raised the money through a number of events, including two sponsored walks on crutches – undertaken to experience the mobility issues faced by some wounded soldiers.

In fact the Mercians were so impressed by Cllr Millward’s efforts during the year that they have made him an official fund-raiser for the regiment – and already he has responded by raising an additional £950.

Other beneficiaries of the Chairman’s fund-raising efforts in 2012/13 included Ashbourne Town Band.

Cllr Millward, who is Chairman of the local branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “It was an incredible honour to help promote the Derbyshire Dales last year and the opportunity to raise money for the benevolent fund of our local regiment made it extra special.

“The Mercians supported me throughout the civic year – including both sponsored walks – and I was thrilled to be asked to continue my association with the regiment.”

As a thank-you from the regiment, Councillor Millward was recently introduced to the Prince of Wales during a presentation of colours to the Mercians at Sixways Stadium in Worcester.

Councillor Peter Slack is this year’s Chairman of the District of the Derbyshire Dales.
