The establishments were selected from hundreds of nominations received by competition organisers Destination Chesterfield, which run the awards in conjunction with Chesterfield College.

Four nominees – Calabria, Stephenson’s Coffee and Tea House, Barca Bar and Tramway Tavern - hope to retain their titles in 2014 after triumphing in their nominated categories last year.

Five businesses have been shortlisted for the Restaurant of the Year category including defending champion Calabria.

Nominated across two categories are Calabria, Lombardis, Stephenson’s Coffee and Tea House, St Thomas’ Coffee Bar and Coco Bar Bistro.

Two new categories have been introduced - International Restaurant of the Year and the Family Friendly Award.

A secret panel of judges will visit the shortlisted businesses in order to decide the winner of each category.

TV chef and presenter Ainsley Harriott will announce the winners, as well as those of an additional four categories, at the awards ceremony on October 29 at Chesterfield College.

Peter Swallow, chair of Destination Chesterfield, said: “The awards are recognition of the contribution Chesterfield’s thriving hospitality industry makes to the local economy. I’m delighted to see how the community has once again got behind the myriad of eating and drinking establishments both locally and further afield and nominated so many of them.

“We have a number of strong contenders in each category, however the proof will be in the eating and our judges will be visiting each and every establishment to check whether they all live up to the claims.”
