Chesterfield roundabout sculpture’s arrival

The £300,000 creation is expected to be delivered on Wednesday and Thursday at 6am and will be erected on the Horns Bridge roundabout over three days.

A spokesman for the Chesterfield Borough Council said: “We have consulted with Derbyshire County Council highways and there are no planned lane closures while the deliveries take place.”

Councillor Terry Gilby, deputy leader and executive member for planningon the borough council said: “Hornsbridge island is a key location for people entering Chesterfield from the M1 and is seen by people passing on the train and we’re confident this will act as a focal point to welcome people to the town centre.”

Funding for the sculpture came from the European Regional Development Fund and Barratt Homes and could only be used to make improvements to the town’s gateways and for public artwork.

The creation, entitled Growth, by Derbyshire artist Melanie Jackson has drawn mixed reaction.

On the Derbyshire Times Facebook page, Natasha McCartney said: “What’s the point, you can’t look at it while driving past. Waste of money.”
