Christmas sparkle in the Dales

As white frost settles upon the Dales, signalling the advent of Christmas, townspeople prepare for festive fun.

Businesses on Smedley Street, in Matlock, are hosting a number of events to get people in the yuletide spirit.

The party will start on December 1 with a 1940s/50s tea dance at County Hall in support of World Aids Day between 3pm and 7pm.

There will be late night shopping on Sunday, December 1, between noon and 9pm, Wednesday, December 11, between 6pm and 9pm and Wednesday, December 18, between 6pm and 9pm.

Shoppers also have the chance to win a Smedley’s Stocking worth more than £200. To be entered for the prize draw, pick up a stocking trail card and collect a signature from each business by December 18.

Entry costs £1 and all proceeds will go towards the Youth Hostel Association’s activity programme for disadvantaged young people.

Bakewell is all set to host its third Christmas weekend where more than 150 stalls will be offering seasonal gifts and produce.

For the first time this year, all the food and drink stalls will be in one place, in the market square.

This all happens over the weekend of Saturday, November 30, from 9am with the central Christmas tree lights being lit at 4.45pm on the Saturday.

A procession will start the festive celebrations in Wirksworth on December 7.

This will follow a ceremony in the Memorial Gardens at 6pm.

The procession, led by the BMW Band, ends in the Market Place and is followed by Santa Claus.

There will then be a count–down to turn the Christmas lights on as well as carol singing.
