COLUMN: Host an event to help boost appeal funds

The big push starts here '“ we've now reached £1.9 million raised toward the cost of building the NGS Macmillan Unit at the Chesterfield Royal Hospital.'¨The response from the local community has been truly amazing, and we are into the final big push. But we still need your help now.'¨So with the sunshine on our backs and a Bank Holiday on the way, I wanted to ask whether anyone reading this would consider putting on an event over the summer for the appeal. '¨The best ideas for events will always come from you, but for those of you in need of inspiration here are some ideas. '¨Set up a sports tournament '“ football, cricket, netball, darts, rounders '“ choose a sport '“ charge people to enter and the more teams who play, the more you raise.'¨You could also host a quiz night. Why not do a special night based on a well-known TV quiz or hold a traditional quiz '“ you can do this in lunchtime or make an evening of it. '¨Afternoon tea is also an option, with everyone's favourite baking show back on our screens soon, why not put together a local Great British Bake off? August is a great time to host a lovely afternoon tea. '¨Alternatively, you could host a music night. Organise some live entertainment, a barbecue and then sell tickets and do some funraising on the night. And of course to sign up and get a free Macmillan fundraising pack do this online at macmillan.org.uk/yourevent or call 0300 1000200. '¨On another note, Queen's Park Sports Centre, Staveley Healthy Living Centre and Simply Gym on Sheffield Road are running a fitness challenge this month called Ride to Rio, in aid of the Mayor's Appeal. Accessible Derbyshire are the other good cause.

It’s around 5,824 miles to Rio from Chesterfield – so first of all don’t worry this is not an individual challenge, though you’re welcome to try this. The aim is for as many members to take part in this virtual run/walk/swim/cycle.
