Technology has swamped and invaded our everyday lives. We rely on our six-inch screens to order our shopping, contact our loved ones and update the world. With this heavy influence, technology undoubtedly affects our social lives and relationships. So the question arises – does technology ruin our love lives?
Social media infamously causes conflict and acts as a platform to exchange indirect insults, and cause further tensions, both within friendships and romantic relationships.
This can amplfy arguments which would otherwise have been resolved, and can often unearth further issues for couples.
How easy is it to take to Twitter after an argument and find, retweet and caption something which could easily trigger an argument? It can be done within seconds.
These angry messages can easily be captured and distributed, causing arguments between couples that wouldn’t happen without the glories of social media.
The idea of giving, or refusing to give a romantic partner a password to said social media accounts can also cause tensions within relationships, as both reactions to this demand have their consequences. For example, refusing to give a password can cause a partner to assume the worst – jumping to conclusions about infidelity. Alternatively, giving your partner access to your private messages can make you feel suffocated and resentful.
Social media and our desire to document, post and upload everything drains the mystery from relationships.
When was the last time you went off the grid?
When was the last evening you spent unaccounted for, away from your partner, letting them wonder what you’re up to? Sometimes mystery is good and allows our partners to miss us.
Technology does not only invade our real lives but can affect relationships. Sometimes we need to look up from our screens to appreciate the effect our digital lives have on our real one.
