Community a step closer to village shop dream

A community is a step closer to getting its shop back following a decision by councillors.

The former Country Choice shop, in Main Road, Grindleford, closed in 2011 leaving the village without a shop.

It has now been added to its Derbyshire Dales District Council’s List of Assets of Community Value following a meeting of the Community Committee.

The inclusion in the list means the community now has a period of six months to prepare a bid to purchase the shop.

The premises was nominated for the list by Grindleford Parish Council.

Upon applying to the district council, the parish council stated: “There is a very strong desire amongst local residents for the provision of a local shop, which has manifested itself by setting up the Grindleford Village Community Shop.

“This was established in 2012 and the committee has widely consulted with the residents of Grindleford.

“The level of support for a community shop is backed up by the fact that over 300 residents have bought membership shares.”

The community has set up a pop-up shop in various locations around the village, but is still searching for a permanent home.

If the community bids for the shop, the owner will be entitled to consider the bid alongside any other commercial bids received and will be free to accept any they wish.
