Cops and docs team up to stop fraudsters

Elderly and vulnerable people are being targeted by fraudsters to seek to prey on them for easy cash.

In response to this, police forces are teaming up with GP surgeries and clinics across the region to raise awareness of the problem, in the hope of stopping the crooks in their tracks.

Victims are being contacted over the phone by a caller claiming to be from their local GP surgery.

In the reported cases, the caller has been highly convincing and arranged an appointment to visit the victim’s home to discuss their mobility needs.

During the appointment, the victim is often persuaded to purchase mobility aids which are inappropriate, simply not needed and always highly expensive.

Following the reports, police in Derbyshire are reminding residents to be vigilant.

Residents are advised that if they are looking to make a big purchase, such as mobility aids, they should always shop around for the best deal before agreeing to buy.

Residents are also being encouraged to always check directly with their local GP surgery before agreeing to a visit or giving out personal information.

To report any suspicious activity to Derbyshire police call the non emergency number 101.

However, if you think a crime is being committed then call the emergency number 999.
