Pensioner, 78, dies in collision

A 78-year-old woman has died after a collision with a car in Ambergate.

Florence Crofts, of Marsh Lane in Belper, was involved in a collision with a blue Volkswagen Beetle at about 7pm last Thursday, February 24.

She was crossing the A6 Derby Road near to St Anne’s Church when the crash happened.

Ms Crofts was pronounced dead at the scene.

She is believed to have been on her way to the opening night of a pantomime performance of Rumpelstiltskin at the church hall.

Ambergate Players were scheduled to be performing the show that night, but cancelled it out of respect to Ms Crofts.

The following night’s show was then dedicated to Ms Crofts, said a spokesman.

Rev Jonathan Page, the vicar at the church, said the community would be touched by the tragedy for a very long time.

Police cordoned off the road for several hours.

The driver of the car, a 44-year-old man from Cromford, was arrested after the incident. He has been released on police bail while inquiries continue.
