“Both carriageways of the A61 had to be closed from the Bowshaw roundabout near Sheffield and further down towards Chesterfield.”

The northbound carriageway was closed to allow an air ambulance to land and take the fatally-injured cyclist to the Northern General Hospital, in Sheffield.

Police confirmed the northbound carriageway has since reopened but the southbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for some time to allow for further investigations of the crash scene.

Long traffic delays are expected during the evening rush-hour.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the collision are urged to call Derbyshire Constabulary on 101.
