Dales’ rubbish service is nearly up-to-speed

AFTER a shambolic roll-out to the new waste and recycling service this year, contractors Serco are finally ‘making headway’ to clear the backlog of rubbish in the Dales.

While the contractors were not willing to provide a set date for when the service will be fully up-to-speed, they are now satisfied that the backlog is diminishing and complaints are falling.

But while things are improving for most people in the Dales, Serco does admit there are still some issues in remoter areas.

Mike Boult, Serco’s director of Environmental Services, said: “We are making headway in establishing the regular waste and recycling services across the Derbyshire Dales and clearing any outstanding backlog.

“We are continuing to provide the additional resources needed and the majority of collections are working well.”

Derbyshire Dales District Council have expressed their satisfaction that things are improving but have warned that Serco will be meeting 100 per cent of the cost of additional services.

A district council spokesman said: “Council tax payers will not be responsible for any of this cost and discussions about claiming back any additional costs incurred by the district council will happen at a later date.

“Our priority right now is that Dales residents, who are already recycling more than ever, get a first class collection service over the Christmas and New Year period.”
