Darley Dale care centre wins design award
A new state-of-the-art community care centre has picked up top accolades in a prestigious regional design competition.
Derbyshire County Council’s multi-million pound residential and community care centre Meadow View in Darley Dale has won a top prize in this year’s Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) East Midlands Awards.
The care centre officially opened in December and specialises in offering care to older people with dementia and complex needs.
Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet mmber for adult care Councillor Jean Wharmby said: “This is a fantastic achievement and everyone involved should be very proud.
“Meadow View is a top-class facility and has already become a real focal point for the community. The judges commented on how highly the centre is regarded by residents, staff and visitors.
“It’s a great example of what good partnership working can achieve and we’re very pleased with the recognition.”
The judges were particularly impressed with the way the building, designed by architects Glancy Nicholls, makes the most of the beautiful countryside environment around it and said ‘Meadow View sets a new standard for dementia care design’.
The annual RIBA Regional Awards celebrate the best in British architecture and focus on designs that aim to improve or enhance people’s lives as well as recognising the importance of buildings to their local community.
Meadow View is one of six East Midlands-based buildings that received awards. All regional award winners will now be considered for the RIBA national awards which will take place next month.
The county council also came away with another top accolade for Meadow View – winning RIBA East Midland’s Client of the Year for the in-depth work carried out with Stirling University focusing on dementia-friendly design.
Derbyshire County Council has 22 residential care homes and community care centres and is currently recruiting staff to join its hard-working care teams ensuring people stay happy, healthy and independent for as long as they can.
