Derbyshire burlesque beauties heading to national competition

Stars of the Peak Districts very own secret burlesque club are fast-tracking their way to compete in Manchester's most prestigious burlesque competition - Burlesque Idol.

Lady Absinthe, founder of the Absinthe and Lace Champagne Supper Club, is delighted that two of her students - Catalina de La Vida of Matlock and Ruby Von Rhyder of Chesterfield - will be taking burlesque to the next level.

She said: “Ruby and Catalina ​are a true inspiration for women everywhere, who show that if you try something new and take a brave step, anything is possible.”

These two regular ladies took the brave and exciting step back in October, to attend a burlesque body confidence course.

Lady Absinthe said: “They have shown such promise, and have gained such confidence and they have recently been appearing in their very own student showcase The Secret Speakeasy produced by Absinthe and Lace.”

The supper club invite guests to step back into a bygone era of opulence and glamour, as you relax in candlelit splendour.

Enjoy an array of sophisticated, class acts, recreating the pass, from Music Hall to Vaudeville, tasteful burlesque to cabaret – a memorable evening for the discerning audience.

Burlesque is type of variety act where women dance in a strip-tease manner and it is associated with high-end glamour and celebrating the female body.

Ruby and Catalina have now been noticed by London’s sell out burlesque show Burlesque Idol which is touring the UK in search of the new queen of burlesque, Derbyshire’s finest have been selected to appear in the new Manchester heat of the competition on Saturday, July 30.

The finest emerging burlesque talents will battle it out for a place in the prestigious grand final at The Hippodrome Casino in London later this year, hosted by Tempest Rose and Lola La Belle.

“It’s going to be a fab night and a great line up of varied competitors,” said Lady Absinthe.

Burlesque Idol the competition

After more than six years of sell-out shows in London’s West End, the UK’s biggest burlesque competition which was created to help support emerging talent, is a high energy and entertaining evening, jam packed with talent, humour and audience participation.

It was founded by Tempest Rose and Lola LaBelle in 2010 and this year alone has taken three national tours across Australia, the USA, and the UK.

Every show features a lineup of the region’s top rising talent, a panel of international star judges, and the chance for every audience member to vote for who they want to see make it to the top - winning over £500 in prizes and the chance to compete in the Grand Finale at the at London’s Hippodrome Casino.
