The cash-strapped authority may have to shake-up the service which would include the removal of wardens from 35 sites where there are either zebra or light-controlled crossings.

Campaign leader Lisa Pritchard said: “We believe that the work we have done speaks enough of a volume to show the council how we feel about its proposal to cut the service.”

A council consultation on the proposals – which can be completed at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/schoolcrossings – closes on Tuesday.

Residents are being urged to have their say on the plans.
