A Derbyshire County Cricket Club player is in hospital following a road crash in which his father died.

Wicketkeeper Tom Poynton, 24, of Swadlincote, suffered serious injuries in the smash on Caldwell Road, Linton, at about 8pm yesterday.

His father, Keith, 57, of Swadlincote, was fatally injured.

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said: “A new red Ferrari 458 Spider left the road and collided with a tree.

“The driver suffered fatal injuries. A passenger was taken to Burton Queen’s Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.”

Simon Storey, chief executive at the cricket club, said: “We are a small close-knit group here at Derbyshire and Tom’s dad was well-known to our players and coaching staff.

“We are still trying to come to terms with the devastating news and at the moment our concerns are solely with Tom and his family at this difficult time.”

The club’s match at Leicestershire tomorrow has been postponed.

A spokesman for the club said: “Tom was taken to hospital by ambulance where he was admitted and retained overnight with a suspected fracture and other associated injuries.

“Everyone at the club is deeply distressed and concerned for Tom and his family.

“The decision has been taken to postpone the LV County Championship Division Two game which was due to start in Leicestershire tomorrow.

“The fixture has been provisionally rescheduled to take place on Sunday, June 8 to Wednesday, June 11.

“The second XI friendly fixture between Derbyshire and Leicestershire, which was due to start at the 3aaa County Ground on Monday, has also been postponed and will be moved to a date to be agreed.”

Anyone who saw the crash should call Derbyshire police on 101.
