The farmers are also being affected by Russia’s retaliatory trade ban following Western sanctions over Ukraine with prices for many falling below the cost of production and are still falling.

NFU’s Derbyshire county adviser Andrew Critchlow said: “Dairy farmers are concerned that if prices for most other dairy products are holding up in the shops where is the money going to - who is profiteering? It is absolutely vital that retailers and processors live up to their past commitments and back British dairy farming to ensure we have a sustainable dairy industry in the future.”

Farmers are invited to an NFU meeting from 7.30pm, on October 22, at The Bluebell Inn, Tissington. The NFU is urging people to back British farming by buying British milk and dairy products.
