The National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the NASUWT accused Education Secretary Michael Gove of being “reckless and irresponsible”.

Deborah Turner, Derbyshire division secretary of the NUT, said: “Since 2010, the Government has embarked on massive changes to education.

“We know that the strike action, which is a direct result of Mr Gove’s refusal to commit to meaningful negotiation, is supported by the majority of parents and governors and by the wider community. We thank everyone for this support and reaffirm our intention to fight for an education system that is good for teachers, good for pupils and good for the future.”

Action is planned across the country throughout October with a possible co-ordinated national strike later in the year.

NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates said: “No one wants to be disrupting children’s education.

“Our experience is parents understand that if you attack teachers’ pay and conditions you are putting at risk children’s education.”

Mr Gove questioned why the unions were pursuing strikes.

He said: “There is no excuse for going on strike.

“What is the complaint that teachers have? Is it that pensions are poor?

“It has been pointed out that even after recent changes, teachers have better pensions than the majority in the public and private sectors.”
