Tracy won praise from the judges for her record of delivery, in a very complex organisation which operates in different localities and environments, and for her work supporting other women.

Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust cares for patients across a wide range of services, delivered from 133 sites including 11 community hospitals and 30 health centres across Derbyshire. This amounts to nearly 1.5 million patient contacts each year.

Tracy joined the NHS as a management trainee at the start of her career and has a wide range of operational and strategic management experience in NHS organisations. Among her previous roles she was an executive director at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust. She was appointed to the post of chief executive of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust on April 1 2011, having earlier steered the organisation to become a successful stand-alone NHS trust.

Alastair McLellan, editor of the Health Service Journal, said the environment could not be tougher for those working at the top of NHS organisations.

He said: “It is hard to imagine a more demanding task than delivering on both finance and quality, while also motivating a workforce struggling with change, ever-increasing demands and pay restrictions. Those who succeed in doing so deserve our admiration.

“As the NHS nears a new financial year with no sign of pressure abating, we need great leaders like these more than ever.”
