DERBYSHIRE: Heatwave ends with a bang

The heatwave ended with a bang this week as violent thunderstorms struck Derbyshire.

For the past three weeks, folk have been enjoying a real taste of summer with the mercury rising to almost 30C.

But thunder, lightning and heavy rain battered the county on Monday night and into Tuesday – signalling an end to the longest heatwave in nearly 40 years.

Rowan Hudson commented: “I was awake at 5.20am thanks to thunder and so was my little one.

“Luckily enough I love storms so I threw open my curtains to watch.

“It was amazing!”

And Andy Liston added: “I didn’t have to wash my car!”

Weather forecasters said that the storms were caused by Atlantic air clashing with humid air.

They added that the rest of the week will include cooler temperatures with continuing showers and thunderstorms.
