Derbyshire '˜hidden gem' named one of the best places to live

A village in the Derbyshire Dales has been listed as one of the best places to live.

Tideswell has been included among 12 locations in the Midlands named in The Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide, set to be published on March 12.

The findings came from statistics on crime rates, house prices, school performance and expert knowledge from writers at the newspaper.

The locations were selected for offering the best quality of life to the widest number of people, and combining desirable features such as a positive community spirit, good shops and services and attractive outdoor spaces.

Writer and editor of the Tideswell village magazine The Village Voice, Pete Hawkins, who has lived in the village for 30 years, said: “It is a bit of a hidden gem.

“To some extent it is a secret village because of lot of people don’t actually know where it is.

“The village is certainly booming. There is a lot of things to do such as clubs and societies from arts, to drama to sports.

“It is an area where people come to shop. We do not have to go out of the village to go to the shops.

“There is a good range of employment and there are a lot of people who work in the village.”

He added: “It is a stunning location and good for walking.

“It is a reliant little village. People don’t look for outside help they just work together and get on with it.”

A statement on behalf of Tideswell Parish Council said: “Tideswell is a thriving village set amid the stunning White Peak countryside inside the Peak District National Park, which has plenty to offer its residents.

“With a wide range of different groups and clubs to be involved in, good sporting facilities, popular pubs and eateries and several shops, it is a great place to live. There are endless outdoor activities to enjoy such as hiking, horse riding and gliding plus wonderful historic houses just a stones throw away.”
