Derbyshire pupils celebrate success of school's literacy boost

Around 22 Year 8 students planned and presented the whole session, with many adults also contributing cupcakes and treats to make the morning that little bit better.

Some students had developed a very challenging quiz on presentational features and modal verbs, whilst others read extracts from recent pieces of persuasive writing. With the help of a slideshow presentation, another group of students demonstrated what literacy lessons involve and explained to the group of more than 60 people why these lessons have had such a positive impact upon their learning at Highfields.

Year 8 student Caroline Haymes said: “These lessons have helped us improve our literacy because we have learnt new techniques for writing. It’s challenging, it’s fun and it’s really helpful.

“It has made a big difference in all of our lessons.”

Afterwards, many parents expressed pride in their children’s progress. One delighted parent said: “ I am very impressed by the standards of work shown, and especially the confidence the children have developed and demonstrated.”  

Headteacher Eddie Wilkes added: “I would like to congratulate all of these youngsters on how enthusiastically they have thrown themselves into developing their literacy skills since they joined Highfields.

“It has been particularly pleasing to see them sharing their work with their families this morning.

“We know that by working closely with families we give our pupils the very best life chances.

“Equally importantly, all of our thanks go to the team of staff who have worked so tirelessly to bring such a successful course together.”
