The intrepid reporter is urging others to join him and the many fundraisers who have already signed up for 50 mile ride on July 28 and the event’s 10 mile ride for more modest riders and families.

Jon said: “This year’s DT and Pelican Cycles’ Flagg Challenge is very special because it will boost our newspaper’s £25,000 appeal for the hospice to coincide with the charity’s 25th anniversary.

“Ashgate Hospice continues to provide fantastic care and comfort to so many seriously ill people and their families and it really stands at the heart of our community.

“To be able take time out of our busy lives for just one Sunday and say thank you to the hospice, have a great day’s ride and help ensure that the charity can forge ahead for another 25 years is the least we can do.”

The 50 mile cycle challenge rolls out from the hospice, on Ashgate Road, Brampton, from 9.30am, on Sunday, July 28, and takes in Cutthorpe, Baslow, Ashford-in-the Water, Sheldon, Monyash, Birchover, Stanton-in-the Peak, Chatsworth and Edensor before rolling back in from Baslow.

Those wishing to join Jon are urged to contact him on (01246) 504524 or [email protected], or call Ashgate Hospice’s Emily Evans on (01246) 568801 or email [email protected] or contact Pelican Cycles, on Old Road, Brampton, Chesterfield, on (01246) 767078 or [email protected].

Jon added: “This event is a lovely leisure ride with only a couple of tough hills and some great views and we’ll be highlighting some potential cafe stops along route to help people refuel and get a well-earned break before they press on. It’s going to be, so please join me for a great day in the Peak.”
