DERBYSHIRE: Students pick up GCSE results

There are smiles across Derbyshire today as eager teenagers rip open envelopes to reveal their grades.

Pupils at St Mary’s Catholic High School, on Newbold Road, Chesterfield, celebrated “outstanding” results with 93 per cent achieving five or more A* to C grades (see video).

Headteacher Sean McClafferty said: “The results are a testament to the incredible hard work of our students, the support of parents and the dedication of the school’s exceptional staff.

“Our aim is that every pupil fulfils his or her potential and has the qualifications to move on to the next stage of their education or career.

“We are extremely proud of all of our young people.”

At Newbold Community School, on Highfield Lane, Chesterfield, 71 per cent of students gained five or more GCSEs at grade C or higher.

Brookfield Community School, on Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield, revealed 88 per cent of its pupils achieved five A* to C grades.

Headteacher Russell Barr hailed the “excellent” results.

Springwell Community College, on Middlecroft Road, Staveley, did “outstandingly well”, achieving the best results in the school’s history. The school hit 56 per cent A* to C grades.

An overall pass rate of 100 per cent is being celebrated at Mill Hill School, on Peasehill, Ripley, with 29 per cent of students clinching three or more A* to A grades.

Acting headteacher Carey Ayres said she was “really pleased” with this year’s results as they reflected the hard work and efforts of pupils, parents and staff.

A record 93 per cent of students at Anthony Gell School, on Wood Street, Wirksworth, achieved at least five higher grades at GCSE.

Headteacher David Baker said: “I’m delighted to see that our most able pupils have achieved lots of A and A* grades but it is just as pleasing to see so many students who have met their personal targets and in many cases exceeded them.”

Duncan Meikle, headteacher of Lady Manners School, on Shutts Lane, Bakewell, praised his pupils after 82 per cent of them were awarded five or more A* to C marks – a record performance.

He said: “Students and staff have worked hard and these successes are very well deserved.”

Seventy-five per cent of pupils at Highfield School, on Lumsdale, Matlock, achieved five or more higher grades.

Seventy-nine per cent of pupils at Hope Valley College, on Castleton Road, Hope, were awarded five or more A* to C GCSEs – smashing the previous college record by 16 per cent.
