Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Thursday, November 19, how David Hall, 18, of Recreation Road, Wirksworth, stole £34 from money bags kept in a large holdall by his father Simon Hall.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said: “The defendant’s father became concerned his son was stealing from him.

“He had £100 in £1 and £2 coins in mini bags in a large holdall and when he checked he realised money had been taken and £34 was missing.”

The complainant contacted his son and confronted him about the theft and later that evening he put on lock chains at their home and told the defendant he could not come in.”

David Hall originally told his father he had not stolen the money, according to Mrs Allsop, and he was allowed into the property but the police were called and he was arrested.

The defendant later admitted to police that he stole the cash for college and intended to repay the money when he received his learning payment allowance.

He pleaded guilty to the theft which happened on September 30.

The probation service stated that the defendant who has expressed remorse has now had to forfeit his carpentry course but hopes to do an apprenticeship.

Defence solicitor Steve Brint told the court the defendant needed to take two buses to get from Wirksworth to Chesterfield and he has had financial difficulties.

Magistrates sentenced David Hall to a 12 month community order with a rehabilitation requirement and 70 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay £34 compensation but due to his financial situation was spared from paying costs and a victim surcharge.
