Doctor helps Chatsworth golfer after heart attack

This was one of three call–outs for East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme (EMICS) doctor, Chris Press, on Sunday.

The golfer received first aid from the golfers and a First Responder from (EMAS) and ambulance arrived to deliver advanced life support. 

Dr Press crossed the course in his own vehicle to back up the team from EMAS. The patient’s heart was restarted shortly after Chris’ arrival so he administered an anaesthetic prior to the patient’s transfer to hospital.

Care of the patient was handed over to the crew from the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance that had landed on the green at the 8th hole. They flew the patient to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

Dr Press’s second call was to a 51–year–old woman on a hen weekend who fell while attempting an assault course, injuring her head and neck.

Dr Press assessed and treated the lady until an EMAS crew arrived. The lady was transported by the land ambulance to the Northern General Hospital.

His third call–out was to assist a couple of climbers who had been injured in a climbing incident on Stanage Edge – one, a 25–year–old female fell and landed on her face. She suffered serious dental injuries, both suffered pelvic fractures and head injuries which caused a period of unconsciousness.

Dr Press who was first at the scene was then assisted by Edale and Glossop Mountain Rescue Teams, the Hazardous Area Rescue Team from EMAS, the Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulances and an EMAS land ambulance all working closely together. The two air ambulances transferred to Northern General Hospital.

Chris said: “This was a complex incident in which a number of agencies and professional volunteers worked closely together alongside many fellow climbers. Together, we ensured the injured were evacuated quickly to a major trauma centre for definitive care.”
