Had Concerned Parent’s (Mercury letters, August 9) daughter and her friend been found to be shoplifting, they would have been issued with a Civil Liability claim in addition to any legal sanction.
This would have been relentlessly pursued by private debt collection agencies, the amount claimed being totally arbitrary and usually quite disproportionate.
The claim would have been in the region of £150 each in a case like this.
So why does Superdrug Matlock not award the girls this amount by way of apology and compensation for their unpleasant experience caused by the store’s unwarranted suspicions?
Don’t hold your breath, girls; they won’t.
Never apologise, never explain.
