Free books will soon be available to download to eBook readers or smartphones thanks to a new library service.
Readers will be able to choose from a wide range of titles including the latest best sellers as well as old favourites.
And anyone interested in the new free book loan service can be among the first to try it by signing up for an email alert.
From mid-July, eBooks are set to be available for free download to all members of the county council’s libraries.
To find out what is available and when the service is live, go to www.derbyshire.gov.uk/ebooks and enter your email address.
The authority is investing £5,000 in hundreds of eBooks which can be downloaded free to any PC, laptop, ebook reader or up-to-date smartphone.
And although they are free to borrow like any library book, there is no need to visit a library to register for or borrow one. Readers do not need to remember to return it as it will simply delete itself from your device when the three-week loan is up - following a 24-hour warning.
Currently, market leader Amazon does not allow loaned books to be used on its Kindle device but this may change in the future.
To access the service, members of Derbyshire County Council libraries will be able to go to the online catalogue, type in their membership number and PIN and then download or reserve the titles they want.
