Drink-driver caught after police claim he went through red traffic light

Police caught a drink-driver after they claimed he had gone through a red traffic light and he he had been suspected of speeding.

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Tuesday, March 21, how Lee Dalton, 26, had been driving along Hollis Lane, Chesterfield, when he was spotted by police and stopped and found to be over the alcohol drink-drive limit.

Prosecuting solicitor Rod Chapman said: “He came to the notice of the police when his vehicle was seen going through a red light and the opinion of the police patrol officers was that his vehicle was being driven in excess of the speed limit.

“They stopped him and he had signs of intoxication and they did a roadside test which he failed.”

Dalton recorded 59microgrammes of alcohol in 100millilitres of breath when the legal limit is 35microgrammes.

The defendant, of Eldertree Road, Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham, pleaded guilty to exceeding the alcohol drink-drive limit after the incident on March 4.

Dalton said: “I was stupid and I realise what I have done now.”

Magistrates sentenced Dalton to a £207 fine and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Dalton was also disqualified from driving for 16 months but was told he could reduce the ban by 17 weeks if he completes a drink drive rehabilitation course.
