Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Friday, May 6, how Jake Marc Wright, 26, of Moseley Street, Ripley, was caught by police during a search at an address in Ripley with 0.1grammes of cocaine and 29.2grammes of cannabis.

Prosecuting solicitor Sarah Haslam said: “Police received a phone call about the address where the defendant was residing. They attended and could smell cannabis and searched the property and found a small bag of cocaine with a bag of green cannabis and five bags of green stalks and a tobacco pouch with cannabis. He accepts it was for his personal use.”

Wright pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine, a class A drug, and to possessing cannabis, a class B drug, after the incident on December 18, 2015.

The court also heard how Wright has a conviction from August last year for similar matters of possessing drugs.

Defence solicitor Nick Wright said: “The last conviction was in August last year and in four months he has gone and done it again and he feels he needs support.”

The probation service said the defendant had gone out with friends and consumed a vast amount of alcohol and had attended an address where an argument erupted.

Police arrived at the address, according to the probation service, and searched the property and found Jake Wright to be in possession of cocaine and cannabis.

The probation service added that the defendant is addicted to smoking cannabis and uses the drug as a coping mechanism to deal with stress but wants to beat the habit.

Magistrates sentenced Jake Wright to a 12 month community order with 120 hours of unpaid work, a Drug Rehabilitation Requirement and a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.

He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
