The award-winning bar oozed old-fashioned charm and was busy with drinkers sampling real ale and a couple of collies sipping from a water bowl.

Relocating to the restaurant, we found a carafe of iced water and fresh flowers on our table which was a nice touch.

My companion tucked into a starter of smoked mackerel pate (£5.95) , which was beautifully moist, and accompanied by dainty slices of toast and the freshest, crispest salad he had tasted.

The main course for both of us was a trio of lamb chops with mint and port sauce (£13.50), which was garnished with redcurrant berries and accompanied by new potatoes, ratatouille and garden peas with parsley. The chops were slightly chewy and the sauce uninspiring but the peas got top marks from my partner who said he’d not tasted peas that good since he was a lad half a century ago.

I rounded off my meal with Mars Bar banoffee pie and cream (£4.95) , which was nice enough but lacked the wow factor, making me determined to sample the Belgian chocolate Malteser crunch when we return.

We’ll book well ahead to ensure a table by the window so we can drink in that fabulous view while we tuck into another value for money meal.
