Experience Derbyshire’s night sky at free stargazing events

Members of the public are being invited to experience the wonders of the night sky at a series of stargazing events.

Chesterfield Astronomical Society (CAS) is opening the doors to the Barnett Observatory, on Hastings Close, Newbold, from 8pm on January 8, 9 and 10.

The open evenings will be held as part of the BBC’s Stargazing Live programme.

CAS secretary Mark Eustace said: “Visitors will be shown around the observatory and a number of talks will be delivered each evening to provide people with some insight into this fascinating subject.

“If the skies are clear, we will make sure visitors have the chance to view planets and stars in stunning detail through our telescopes.

“We’ll have experts on hand to answer questions and the kettle will always be hot to make sure we can provide tea and coffee throughout each evening.”

The events are free although CAS would gratefully receive any voluntary donations to help with the maintenance of the observatory.

All ages are welcome – under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.
