A FAMILY-run catering company has branched out from a home business.

Bluebell Food Company has opened premises on the corner of Smedley Street, Matlock.

The business was set up by Matlock resident James Shawe and his wife Carly, who decided to go into catering in search of something new.

“I was in commercial banking until about three years ago,” James said.

“I wanted a complete chance and so I decided to develop the small catering company.”

At the time Carly had just had the couple’s first child, Isabelle, but she too wanted to try something different from her day job of teaching.

“We converted the back of the property and ran the company out of that,” James explained.

Having the business so close at hand was not ideal for the couple however, as they found it hard to switch off from work, so when they saw the property come up for grabs on Smedley Street they took it.

They now offer over the counter service for customers with food like paninis, wraps and cup cakes, as well as catering for both corporate and private events.

“All the fruit, vegetables and meat are delivered fresh daily,” James said.

“We use Coates butchers in Two Dales for our meat, John Palins in Tansley for our vegetables and Jacksons in Clay Cross for our baked goods.

“I honestly believe smaller local firms give a better product and better service.

“I could phone the Coates if I needed something and they’d be here in the hour.”

The business is also looking into different ways people can order food from them – using email and telephone.

James and his wife are currently looking after their four-week-old baby boy, Harry, and are hopeful for the future of their business.
