After being shocked by pictures of drowned children on the island of Kos, off Greece, the Worsley family made a vow to help the plight of refugees.

Less than two weeks ago the family, of Linden Grove, put a notice in their local church asking for donations, and their efforts have now snowballed into a three-lorry mission to refugee camps in Greece.

Liz Worsley said that it was her 14-year-old daughter, Meghan, who provided the spark for her and husband Sean to start the mission.

Liz said: “We were sat around the dinner table, all so shocked by the pictures of the drowned children in Kos. Meghan said ‘we have got to do something’ and so the idea was born. Meghan also came up with our group name, Hope for Refugees.”

She added: “From there it’s snowballed. We’ve had so many donations now. We are also delivering donations from Darley Dale, Bakewell, and Sheffield.”

Liz said the donations will have to be transported in three 7.5 tonne lorries.

She said: “We will be hiring the lorries, but if there are any companies who could help with this, please get in touch. We also need cardboard boxes and a warehouse to sort the donations. As far as donations themselves, we now mainly need toiletries and camping equipment.”

People can donate at Magpie, in Dale Road, Matlock, but donations must be in cardboard boxes. Alternatively, contact [email protected] or call 07721693045.
