FEEDIng the 5,000 is one of the bible’s most celebrated stories, and a Matlock church has recently reached the meal-related milestone.
The Evangelical Church on Steep Turnpike has been serving free meals every first Friday of the month for seven years.
Ironically, on Good Friday they served up their 5,000th.
Run by helpers, volunteer Rosalind Kawalek said: “We started in 2005 and we had about 35 people, now we get and average of about 75. During the holidays we can get 100.
“We have a donation pot but if nobody puts anything in, it’s fine. We never knew how long it would last, but as long as we have helpers, we will continue.
“It fantastic to reach 5,000.”
