New labour market statistics have shown that a total of 87,000 more people are in employment across the East Midlands now than they were last year.

In the same period there has been a massive decrease in the number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in the region, with 29,800 less people claiming the unemployment benefit.

There has also been a reduction in Jobseekers Allowance claimants in Chesterfield over the last year, with 1,593 people claiming the benefit from the town’s Job Centre in August 2014.

George Cowcher, chief executive of the chamber of commerce for Derbyshire, said: “Headline rates of unemployment and claimants of Jobseeker’s Allowance remain at pre–recession levels, which highlights just how strong and flexible the local labour market is at present.

“Evidence from businesses operating across a range of sectors shows confidence is rising.”
