The first snow of winter falls in Derbyshire

Within the last hour, folk have taken to Twitter to report snowfall in parts of the Peak District – including Buxton and Tideswell.

Forecasters say further wintry showers are expected to blanket Derbyshire’s hills tonight – and more snow may even fall to lower areas of the county on Sunday into Monday.

Over the weekend, daytime temperatures will struggle to rise above 5C and overnight temperatures are set to plunge below freezing as air from Greenland covers the UK.

And a spell of unsettled and potentially disruptive weather – including gales and snow – could be on the way next week, according to the Met Office.

Drivers are being warned to be aware of icy roads during the big chill. The Met Office has issued a yellow ‘be aware’ warning of ice between 6pm and 9am tomorrow.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Icy stretches may form on untreated surfaces on Friday evening and overnight into Saturday morning. The public should be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions.”

A Derbyshire police spokesman added: “We would warn motorists to take extra care on the roads as winter sets in.”

Gritters across Derbyshire are ready to deal with the cold snap.

Derbyshire County Council has just taken delivery of 15 new gritter lorries to replace 15 old ones and the authority has about 24,000 tonnes of grit in stock.

It costs £15,000 to grit the county’s primary and secondary routes.
