Former Headteacher of Anthony Gell School, David Baker, said: “I am deeply saddened to hear of Sam’s tragic death. I will always remember him as a lively and cheerful student at Anthony Gell who had many good friends and took a full part in school activities both in the classroom and beyond.

“It was during his final year with us that he took up a work placement at DLS in Wirksworth which he instantly loved. He combined this very successfully with his GCSE courses and we were delighted when he was offered a full time post there on leaving school.

“I and everyone associated with Anthony Gell want to pass on our deepest condolences to Sam’s family and friends and to let them know that we will always remember Sam and all that he gave to the life of the school.”

Yesterday, Sam’s father also paid a heartfelt tribute to his son.

Sam Moorhouse, 58, said: “In such as short life I can’t believe how much he affected the people he met.

“I have just been to town and people have been stopping me in the street and coming out of shops to speak to me about him.

“I just can’t believe how loved he was by people.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the accident to call on 101.
