High Peak Road Race attracts an array of top regional cyclists

Cycle racing returns to the roads of the Peak District with the fourth running of the High Peak Road Race.

The race will start at 10am, on Sunday, June 30, and covers six laps of a seven mile course starting in Chelmorton and heading out to Flagg and Monyash with a grand finish near Flagg at about 11.45am.

Organiser TLI Cycling has recently granted the race the status of being one of its flagship events.

The race is jointly promoted by the Sheffield-based Sharrow Cycling Club and Whirlow Wheelers Cycling Club with help from Sheffield Racing Club.

Joint event organiser John Collins said: “The race’s popularity and status is growing in response to the nationwide increase in the popularity of cycling, particularly in the North Midlands area.

“It is part of TLI Cycling’s calendar, which includes age-related cycle races catering for all abilities. Riders will be handicapped into three groups based on their age and ability. They will come from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire, Merseyside, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire.”

This year’s race is sponsored by Montura Bikes, Harrison Cameras of Sheffield and Polaris Bikewear and will be supported by The UK Sepsis Trust.

In the UK alone, there are 102,000 severe cases of the disease every year, 37,000 of these victims die. To set things in context, breast cancer claims just over 8,000 lives a year.

Joint Event organiser Mr Collins added: “Our intention is that this year’s event continues its high standards. It is a privilege to bring cycle racing back to the beautiful Peak District which provides challenging terrain to race through and provides an exciting spectacle with a worthy winner.”
