‘Horrendous’ pollution incident hits Derbyshire river

An ‘horrendous’ pollution incident has taken place on a stretch of the River Amber between the villages of Higham and Ogston.

Bill Sowerbutts and his wife witnessed ‘thousands’ of dead fish in the Derwent tributary while out walking on Sunday.

He phoned the the Environment Agency and Severn Trent water who said they would send teams to find the source but when he contacted them again on Monday they had found nothing.

Bill said: “It is not so much the big fish that are the issue, but the tiny fish.

“Generally these can tolerate high levels of pollution and survive – so whatever hit this river was really really nasty.

“There was some brown scummy foam left in places but mainly the river was clear indicating the pollution had passed through.

“And the river is clear at Milltown - so its between there and where we saw the fish that it has happened.”
