Huge effort to save Wirksworth Carnival 2013

A huge effort is underway from Wirksworth residents who are desperate to make sure this year’s carnival goes ahead.

The annual Wirksworth Carnival has been a regular fixture in the town for many years now.

But owing to funding problems, there is currently nothing scheduled for May 25, 26 and 27 as normal.

Despite the short time frame, Wirksworth resident Sally Smart is hoping to recruit a new carnival committee – at a meeting on Thursday, April 25, in the Hope and Anchor – to make sure the event goes ahead.

Sally said: “My concern is that, if the carnival is axed this year, then the precedent is set and nothing will ever happen again.

“I know it is a short time frame to get something arranged but we are confident this is possible.”

Sally admits that arranging something as grand as years gone by is a “tough task” but believes it is possible to arrange a parade, stalls and activities –should she be successful in recruiting a new carnival committee – and bring the carnival back to its former glory next year.

The Mercury approached current carnival organisers on several occasions but was unable to get a comment on the situation.
