Iconic Matlock Bath landmark set for £170,000 face-lift

In the coming months, Derbyshire Dales District Council will restore the Jubilee Bridge to the way it looked when first opened in 1887 – to celebrate the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria.

To make the restoration authentic, a selective ‘paint scrape’ has taken place to trace the original colour scheme. The investigation has revealed three or four colours have been used down the years, with the current maroon and cream scheme introduced in 1987.

However, it seems originally just one overall colour – a mid-green – was used on the cast iron footbridge that spans the River Derwent, linking the promenade in Matlock Bath to the Lovers’ Walks.

Director of Planning and Housing Services Paul Wilson said: “Residents, traders and the local media have correctly made the point that the bridge needs to be refurbished, which is why we have set money aside this year.”

The bridge is expected to be finished in July.
