Bakewell and District Probus welcomed a very special speaker to their meeting at the Monsal Head Hotel: Simon Brown of Blind Veterans UK.
Most members were unaware that the age old name of St Dunstans is no more and that the organisation has been renamed Blind Veterans UK.
An inspired talk by a man shot in Iraq in 2006 and who now only has 20 per cent vision in his right eye, Simon spoke for 45 minutes and answered questions for a further 20.
He showed no outward bitterness, but was just glad to be alive.
Simon praised Blind Veterans UK and told the Club: “I have regained my confidence.”
A delightful man who was a joy to meet, he was taken to Chesterfield station en route to his next speaking engagement at Cardiff the next morning.Simon was introduced wand thanked by member Derek Briggs.
An entirely voluntary collection at the end of the meeting raised an extraordinary £175.
