IPCC investigation into the death of Mitchell Rodgers near Belper train station finds no case to answer for police officers

Keen skateboarder Mitchell Rodgers, 16, of Nether Heage, was killed at around 9.50pm on Saturday, March 28.

Derbyshire Police had referred the case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission because its officers had brief contact with him shortly before his death.

IPCC commissioner Kathryn Stone, who has overseen the investigation, said: “Mitchell’s death is a tragic loss to his family and friends and my thoughts are with them.

“IPCC investigators interviewed witnesses, reviewed CCTV, and analysed evidence as part of its independent and impartial investigation.

“Our investigation found that there was no case to answer for the officers involved. There was nothing to suggest the officers had acted in an unprofessional manner or that they could have in any way prevented this tragic accident.”

A family liaison officer has offered support to Mitchell’s family throughout the investigation.

The fanatical skateboarder, of Bentfield Road, died as a result of head injuries and had to be formally identified by tattoos on his fingers.

Mitchell was a pupil at Denby’s John Flamsteed Community School.
