Scape, a local authority controlled organisation specialising in procurement and construction, has awarded the money to the Ironville Youth Carriage as part of its Reinvest programme.

The money for the Youth Carriage, which is located on the park in Ironville next to the multi-use games area, will be used to refurbish the interior, build a new kitchen and toilets at the back of the carriage and develop community and youth engagement with the project.

Group chief executive of Scape Mark Robinson said: “We’re delighted to be able to allocate this funding to the Ironville Youth Carriage, which has proved to be a vital and well-loved part of the local community since it was first opened as a meeting point for young people 15 years ago.

“The money will be used to wholly refurbish the carriage’s interior, adding a new kitchen with a range of equipment and a new toilet block. The aim is to make the carriage an even more central part of the community and ensure that the facilities are suitable for regular use by young people.”

Key objectives of the project, which will be overseen by Derbyshire County Council, also include commissioning the local Council Volunteer Services to develop training packages to build community leadership skills at the carriage and strengthen the relationships between young people and their community.

Derbyshire County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Councillor Kevin Gillott, said: “At a time when the government is cutting the councils budgets we are grateful to Scape for providing this funding. It will allow us to refurbish the youth carriage and provide more services for local young people.”
