A DEVOTED pair have celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary – making them possibly one of Britain’s longest married couples.

Ivy and Wilf Turberville, of Matlock, marked the milestone with family and friends at Valley Lodge Nursing Home on Bakewell Road, where they have lived for the past two years.

The happily married couple have always lived in the Matlock area. Wilf – known as Monty – was born in Darley Dale and Ivy in Riber.

Car and bike enthusiast Monty, who has celebrated his 102nd birthday, met his future bride at Holloway while motor biking with her brother.

The couple married at Holloway Church and Monty set up a successful haulage business which saw him owning a fleet of lorries. Ivy, 98, worked at John Smedley’s mill in Lea.

The pair, who do not have any children, enjoy spending time with their nephews and nieces.

Monty said the secret to their long and happy marriage was “love and good will.”

Nurse at Valley Lodge, Katy Smith added: “They are devoted to each other and live for each other. When one has been unwell the other sits holding their hand all day.

“They are very popular and sociable couple.”

Friend Joe Walker, who used to work for Monty and visits the couple every week, said: “Monty used his and Ivy’s savings to buy a little lorry to carry loads and worked hard and ended up running lots of vehicles. He was a good business man and could fix any engine. He still talks about driving and wishes he had a car.

“They are a very well-known couple and have lots of friends in this area.”

Monty and Ivy celebrated their big day, on Thursday September 23, with a party at Valley Lodge .

Katy Smith said: “It was a lovely day. We had a cake and balloons.

“It’s rare to get to this anniversary and we are all very pleased for them.”

It is believed the couple are the longest married in Britain. In July another couple appeared in the national press having reached their 77th anniversary and claimed to be the holders of the title.
