For the next six months the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is going to be top of the agenda for most local communities and our towns will be no different.
Meetings are being planned to discuss how best to celebrate our monarch’s milestone and our readers have tipped a big party in the park to be an odds on winner.
It is great to see that in Matlock the Cavendish Fields are already on their way to being part of the occasion (see this week’s front page) and that Matlock Town Council is seeking ideas on how we can commemorate the occasion. There is a meeting in the Imperial Rooms next Wednesday evening so please go along.
The Mercury plans to launch a fund raising campaign to buy a new avenue of trees for Hall Leys Park and we hope that all of you will back the project in some way.
It is a magnificent achievement by Queen Elizabeth to have been on the throne for 60 years. Only Queen Victoria has served us longer.
And if nothing else our readers are quite right – it is the perfect excuse to have a huge knees-up in the park.
