The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire have helped to plant the first tree for a new woodland on the Chatsworth Estate.

The Woodland Trust is working with the estate and the Forestry Commission to create a 25 hectare Diamond Wood on land adjascent to the A619 near Baslow.

The move is part of the trust’s Jubilee Woods Project and is designed to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The project will be backed with a £155,000 grant from the Forestry Commission.

The Duke said: “I am very proud that Chatsworth is one of sixty sites in the UK, and the only Diamond woodland in Derbyshire, to mark Her Majesty’s remarkable jubilee year with 60 acres of new woodland.”
