Man is killed by on-coming train

Derbyshire Constabulary and the British Transport Police have launched an investigation after an elderly man was discovered dead following a collision with an on-coming train.

The collision happened on the rail line at Shirebrook station, off Station Road, about 11pm, on Tuesday, April 22.

British Transport Police stated the deceased man was 72-years-old and was from Mansfield and was found on the tracks.

A police spokesman said: “Sadly, there has been a fatality on the rail tracks at Shirebrook train station involving a man. The incident involved a collision with an on-coming train.

“The British Transport Police have been alerted and are handling the matter.”

Derbyshire Constabulary explained the British Transport Police will be investigating the circumstances around the death.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “We were called shortly after 11pm on Tuesday, 22 April to Shirebrook rail station in Mansfield following reports of a person being struck by a train.

“Our officers attended, alongside colleagues from Derbyshire Police and East Midlands Ambulance Service and discovered a 72-year-old man from the Mansfield area had been struck and killed by a train.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and we will now assist in the compilation of a report for the coroner.”
