Man sentenced after hammer attack on student

A man who hit a student over the head with a hammer has been sentenced to 18 months in a young offender institute.

Joe Moore, of Kendal Road, Sheffield, was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on Friday, November 4.

He pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and having an offensive weapon. He was also ordered not to contact the victim for five years.

On the afternoon of December 14 2010, an 18-year-old returned to Calver on the bus after spending the day at school.

He walked along Newburgh Terrace and was approached by Moore and another man. Moore hit the victim several times with a hammer before the pair ran off.

The victim had three cuts to his head and needed 60 stitches at hospital.
