Three Matlock Air Cadets returned last week from a week at sea on the Royal Navy cadet training ship TS Royalist.

Flight Sergeant Ed Muscroft, Sergeant Will Muscroft and Sergeant Dan Stimpson joined cadets from around the country in taking part in a full programme of handling a ship at sea.

They sailed from Portsmouth and cruised around the south coast as far as Poole. Will aged 17 said; “The wind was against us for our hopes of getting as far as France.

“But the weather was actually very kind and very few were seasick. It was a great team-building experience and opened up a whole new aspect of cadet life.”

They took part in hauling sails, steering and tacking the ship, demonstrations of safety and navigation equipment. They also cleaned the ship and gained valuable experience in the whole operation of a ship at sea.

Dan, aged 16, added: “I believe that everyone bonded together as a team and got to know each other very quickly.

“I would recommend this trip to any cadet who wants a truly amazing experience.”
